Mechanical Flow Metering

ELSTER offers a wide range of different measurement devices for measurement of gas volume and gas flow. That comprises volumetric meters like diaphragm meters and rotary meters as well as flow meters like turbine meters and ultrasonic meters. All measuring devices meets the highest standards concerning quality, safety and meteorological requirements.



Diaphragm meters
Elster diaphragm meters are displacement meters where the flow channels are designed to guarantee optimum flow conditions and a low pressure loss. All of the meters are approved for custody transfer measurement by the German PTB and to EN 1359 by German DVGW. They are suitable for measuring natural gas and a variety of technical gases at up to 0.5 bar. The approved gas temperature range is -25 °C to +40 °C. The diaphragm meters BK-G 1.6 up to G 100 are fitted with a pulse magnet as standard. This allows to retrofit a low-frequency pulser of the IN-Z61 type.


Rotary gas meters
Elster rotary gas meters are volume measuring instruments for gaseous media and operate according to the displacement principle. They register the gas volume under working conditions. In order to correct the measured value to the standard volume, electronic volume correctors can be used.


Turbine meters & Quantometers
Elster turbine meters as well as Elster quantometers are flow meters which display the volume flowing through the device in actual cubic meters. The incoming gas is accelerated through the inlet body and strikes the blades of the turbine wheel. The revolutions of the turbine wheel are transferred to an 8-digit roller counter via a multistage gear and a magnetic coupling.
Turbine meters TRZ2 and SM-RI-X are approved for official metering and billing purposes (custody transfer) of natural gas in gas transmission and distribution as well as with a variety of technical gases in industrial applications. Quantometers are short pattern turbine meters, They are preferably used in non-custody transfer applications (i.e. in-plant measurement).
All turbine gas meters fulfil international directives and norms for pressure equipment (PED) and explosion protection (ATEX) as well as metrological requirements and directives.


Intelligent index solutions
For use with our mechanical devices, we offer intelligent index solutions which can help to optimise invoicing processes.

The Absolute ENCODER index for mechanical gas meters (S1, S1D, MI-2, AE2) consists of a mechanical index in which each individual digit roller is optoelectronically scanned and read out. The data is then continually transferred as a data word via a digital interface to a downstream device (e.g. volume corrector), whereby permanent data transfer security is guaranteed, compared with the conventional transfer of pulses.
The consistent modular design of the Absolute ENCODER AE2 minimizes the efforts and expenditure of installation, commissioning and data provision of the communications modules of the Smart Metering technology.

The modularly designed electronic themis indexes for diaphragm gas meters are suitable in all variants for the realization of a full Smart Metering system.

The CHEKKER index for Diaphragm Meters uses the manually read out data by means of a two-digit, mechanically generated encrypted check number. This check number is also recorded during the read-out process and permits to verify the correctness of the read-out data in the computer system.
